The manufacturers of veterinary products have options for printing products that range from pharma feeders equipped with thermal transfer or thermal ink jet bar code models. Both printers are capable of adding multiple lines of “human readable” text to the product cartons.
Friction feeder variants allow the cartons to be fed with the flaps leading in and this presents them to the printer in a favorable orientation for printing. Thermal transfer was deemed to provide the highest quality of print on the packages. This technique also highlighted that off line printing is ideal for printing on the packages because of the inherent coding necessary.
Datamatrix or barcode printed results however are more impressive and pair well with a thermal transfer printer. This raises the question, then as to why a thermal inkjet printer would be chosen over the thermal transfer option.
Thermal inkjet printers don’t come into contact with the product it’s printing on and this makes it easier to make changes in orientation if necessary. This is a common practice to print on the “dust flap” of a carton.
The thermal ink jet printers are also better at through puts than are other printers that have to have the containers fed “body” first. The speeds of this linear printer are much higher.
Manufacturers in the veterinary and other pharma industries have options when it comes to their offline datamatrix and barcoding needs.
